Shakyamuni means the sage from Shakyas.
Around 556 BC Siddartha Gaulama was born in the Shakyas region
in Nepal as a prince. At age 29 Siddhartha abandoned all worldly
possessions in search of the Truth. After years of extreme asceticism,
he realized that the Truth lies in, "The Middle Way."
This statue depicts the moment of enlightenment, when Siddhartha
became, "Buddha," the, "Awakened One." Influenced
by a statue from the 15th century, Ming Dynasty, this statue
shows Shakyamuni seated on the lotus, a symbol of purity, with
his right had in a Bhumisparsha gesture. ("Touching the
earth," mudra) and left had in an Avakasha gesture (Mudra
of leisure). The fine detailied opulent robe, the stylistic full-volume,
the well-balanced proportions, and the noble and contemplative
expression, makes a particularly regal representation of the
founder of Buddhism. |
