I suppose the fundamental rational and inspiration for creating this series of works stems from my interest in man's early efforts as self-expression. These efforts lead to man's ability to leave a record of himself through symbols. The distillation of ancient people's thoughts into characters and symbols fascinates me. I enjoy trying to find the essence of the character, which were the images used before people learned to write. For instance to find the "woman" form in the Chinese character for woman, or the drop of water and "splash" in the character for water. I invite the viewer to do the same and to feel the connection with history.

The greatest challenge is developing three-dimensional medium, while preserving the original meaning and imparting my own individual signatures.    -- Lee Coulter
