The Danish sculptor
Bertel Thorvaldsen emulated ancient Greeks, believing that they
were the only sculptors who attained a purity of formal beauty
without regard to content. Probably his best known work is the
statue of Hebe. Hebe, an attendant to Venus, was the goddess
of beauty in the hierarchy of the deities of ancient Greece.
She served as the cup bearer for the gods. Her pure beauty and
everlasting youth made her portrayal a splendid choice for the
neo-classic theory of art. Since the prototypes for sculptural
reproduction may be made by different sculptors, there are often
differences in the reproduction of different sizes. The sizes
differ slightly. |
