Guido Reni's archangel Michael (in the
Capuchin church of Santa Maria della Concezione, Rome, 1636)
tramples Satan. A mosaic of the same painting decorates St. Michael's
Altar within St. Peter's Basilica. It may have been natural to St Michael, the champion of the Jewish people, to be the champion also of Catholic Christians, giving victory in war to his clients. |
